WHAT IS LYMPHOEDEMA?

Lymphoedema is a chronic inflammatory condition in which part of the lymphatic drainage system fails to work effectively.

The Lymphatic system:

  • Helps to protect us from infection and disease, it is part of the immune system and works as the bodies waste disposal system

  • Keeps the bodies fluids in balance, absorbs and transports helpful vitamins and hormones

When the lymphatic system fails to work efficiently fluids and harmful substances collect in the affected area and cause swelling (oedema), this also causes changes to the skin and tissues.

Symptoms include

  • Feeling of tightness, clothes and shoes can cause restriction and dig in.

  • Evidence of swelling, which can reduce in the early stages

  • Episode of a bacterial infection of the skin (cellulitis ). The area will appear red and hot, swelling will increase. People with lymphoedema are at greater risk of cellulitis. It requires prompt medical attention. (see www.lymphoedema.org for further advice)

TYPES OF LYMPHOEDEMA

Primary- An abnormality of the lymphatic system that has been present since birth, it can be evident from birth but can also be identified in later life.

Secondary- is a result of damage to a normally functioning lymphatic system. There are many causes including:-

  • Cancer and cancer treatments, e.g. surgery to remove lymph nodes and Radiotherapy

  • Cellulitis, each episode damages the initial lymphatics just under the skin.

  • Inflammatory conditions, chronic skin conditions, slow healing wounds and fungal infections.

  • Circulatory problems such as varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

  • Health conditions such as Heart failure and heart problems, Arthritis, thyroid problems

  • Surgery, such as knee and hip operations

  • Lack of mobility/activity and obesity

WHAT IS LIPOEDEMA?

Lipoedema is a connective adipose tissue disorder that affects mainly women. It is characterised by a symmetrical, disproportionate distribution and build up of abnormal fat. This mainly affects the hips, buttocks and legs, sometimes the arms. The fat is different to ‘normal’ fat and affected skin can therefore be uneven and bumpy in texture. Common symptoms are heaviness, discomfort and pain in the affected areas.
